For years the ANC denounced South Africa's police as brutal agents of a hostile state.  Now the same police are supposed to become dutiful servants of a democratic government.  Over the past six weeks, Peter Godwin has been with the security forces in some of the most violent townships to find out how individual policemen are adapting to change.
